The team began the first leg of their journey in Calgary, where they spent time acclimatising, recovering and training. Three Auckland brothers are in line to play for the Black Sox after being named in the national men's softball training squad. The team now has a rest day tomorrow before playing two exhibition games vs club sides CAE and Don Bosco. After trailing 0-4 after 4 innings the team got the bats going with hits to Josh Harbrow, Hohepa Monk and Isaac Fletcher helped level the scores at 4 a piece. Jovaan then bounced back to shut the local club side hitters down whilst the Black Sox bats woke up in the 3rd inning with the team rallying to score 3 runs.
Pita Rona is not the only college student selected in the team with Wellington's Jerome Raemaki being the other. The team leaves on Saturday for the 20-day tour which will see the side play a number of games including the Legends of Fastball Classic tournament in Kitchener, Canada and the Peligro tournament in New York. He was the leading pitcher at the Interislander National Fastpitch Championship and then backed up that performance by taking out the same award while playing for club side Waitakere Bears at the national interclub tournament. Congratulations to Nick Hayes and Kurt Schollum who played their first game for the Black Sox, both were added to the tour to build pitching depth for the future, and each came on as relief pitcher and did well.

A number of debutants from last Novembers Argentinian tour have been renamed along with Auckland based Alfonz Oveinikovas who will make his first appearance in the black jersey. The pitching staff will also include Hutt Valley's Nik Hayes, who won a gold medal at Auckland in 2013, and United States-based left-hander Karl Gollan. Pettett proved his class in pitching the Black Sox to victory over Argentina in the Challenge Cup tournament in Auckland in February. The Golden Homes Black Sox concluded their World Championship build up tour of British Columbia with a heavy 10-3 loss to Canada in the semi-final of the Bob Law Memorial Tournament this morning.

Josh Pettett got the start for New Zealand in the middle of the circle throwing 2 innings, giving up a double and taking 4 strikeouts. Pettett will be a key competent for the Black Sox when the playoff commence on Saturday. The game was starting to turn into a slug fest as Denmark’s Martin Simonsen launched one of his own off New Zealand relief pitcher Karl Gollan. But two further runs in the 5th was enough for the Black Sox to get the win and look ahead to the last of the section games against Botswana tomorrow. It was the last opportunity for Black Sox management to ensure all players and the pitching staff in particular were ready for the business end of the tournament commencing at 2pm tomorrow. Bottom of the 7th will bases loaded, Hayes walks in a Canadian runner to make it and now with everything on the line.

New Zealand's most decorated softballer Mark Sorenson will receive another honour when the International Softball Congress admits him to the ISC Hall of Fame at the annual championships in Midland, Michigan. Black Sox management have imposed a "zero-tolerance" drug policy and warned any player caught smoking cannabis will be banned from the 2013 world men's softball championships in Auckland.
"Thomas brings genuine class to the squad. His presence will have a real impact on the younger players." Softball New Zealand would like to extend its congratulations to Craig Soper on his recent appointment as Black Sox Technology Assistant. Craig replaces Clayton Willocks who has been with the Black Sox for the past 12 months. Softball New Zealand would like to thank Clayton for the time and energy he has invested into the role during this time and wish him well with his future endeavours. The culture in the Black Sox environment highlights the importance of preparation, with players not only consistently performing week in and week out, but improving as they strive to become the best they can be.
Both teams were effectively shut down in the last three innings once Schollum returned to his USI squad and Marlborough-born Hayes took the mound for the national side. Jerome Haretuku drove the ball to centre field and was scored by Dan Tarapi who hit to the fence. They will also play in two major club tournaments - the Brother Patrick and Dean Schick tournaments in Auckland - ahead of the world championships at Rosedale Park from March 1-10.
